2027 Seed Season: Plan a Kitchen Garden Around What You Cook

2027 Seed Season: Plan a Kitchen Garden Around What You Cook

Start with the meals you want to cook next summer. A tray of roasted green chiles. Pale cherry tomatoes beside a slice of fresh cheese. A spoonful of fragrant pepper sauce that adds flavour without overwhelming dinner. That is the starting point for Casa Verde’s 2027 seed selection.

Our 2027 seed collection brings together new arrivals and returning favourites marked for the coming season. The first selection includes peppers for sauces, roasting, pickling and drying, alongside White Cherry Tomato for fresh summer plates. This is an early look at the 2027 lineup; the collection will grow as more products are added.

Pepper fragrance with a gentler touch

No Heat Primo has the wrinkled Primo look and fruity chinense aroma, with a sweet to very mild heat profile. Use it as the starting point for an aromatic sauce, a fresh salsa or a seasoning powder. Its listing gives approximately 100–120 days from transplant, so it belongs in the part of your plan reserved for peppers that need a long growing window.

Two returning kitchen favourites also join the 2027 selection. Aji Cachucha brings mild Caribbean seasoning-pepper character to sofrito, beans and rice. Habanero El Remo offers a mild habanero-type profile for fruity salsa and table sauces. Choose by the flavour you want in the finished dish, and check each listing’s heat description before building your shortlist.

Peppers for the roasting tray and pickle jar

XL Newmex Chili is a mild, large-podded roasting pepper for green chile, stuffing and red sauce. It is a useful choice if you picture the harvest in batches: roasted strips for dinner, chopped green chile for the freezer and ripe red pods for sauce.

La Bomba II Jalapeno brings thick walls and medium heat to poppers, salsa and sliced rings. It is listed as a hybrid, an important detail if saving seed is part of your garden plan. Biquinho White takes a different direction: small cream-coloured, beak-shaped peppers with gentle heat for whole-pod pickles, relish and garnish.

A little room for colour and experimentation

The 2027 lineup also has peppers for growers who enjoy watching the plant as much as using the harvest. Dreamcatcher x Farmers Market Jalapeno combines variegated foliage with jalapeno-style kitchen uses. Purple Delight Gephardt x Golden Nugget is an ornamental edible cross with small hot pods for sparing use in salsa, flakes and condiments. Both are crosses or selections where variation is part of the growing experience.

Scorpion Tongue Black adds dark-to-striped pods and hot annuum-style bite for sauce and drying. Black Lantern Poblano-Type is an experimental selection for growers interested in roasting and sauce peppers; read its product notes before choosing it for a specific result. Catarina rounds out the hot side of the selection with a drying-pepper direction for salsa and sauce.

Leave room for a trial plant. A small garden does not need every unusual pepper. Choose the varieties that cover your everyday cooking first, then give one experimental or collector pepper a place you can watch closely. Keep notes on flavour, ripening and how you actually used the harvest.

White Cherry Tomato for the summer table

White Cherry Tomato brings ivory-to-cream fruit, sweetness and juice to salads, snack bowls and fresh garnish. Pair it with red or orange tomatoes for contrast, or warm it briefly with olive oil and herbs. It is an indeterminate tomato, so plan a stake or trellis as well as room for the vine to grow.

Build your 2027 garden backwards from transplanting

There is no single seed-starting date that fits every Canadian garden. Begin with your local spring frost window, then check each product’s sowing and transplant notes. The long-season chinense peppers need an earlier indoor start than tomatoes, and maturity figures usually refer to time after transplanting rather than time after sowing.

  • This autumn: review what you cooked from the garden, check your seed packets and choose the jobs you want next year’s plants to do.
  • Before indoor sowing: match your shortlist to available light, growing space and the length of your outdoor season. Read the variety notes before committing to several long-season peppers.
  • As spring approaches: use the Canadian Seed-Starting Calendar to organize your crop schedule around your own frost estimate. Adjust transplanting to actual weather and soil conditions.
  • At harvest: record flavour, ripening dates and the recipes you returned to. Those notes will make the following season’s choices easier.

A useful garden starts with a few good choices. Pick something you will roast, something you will eat fresh and something you will be glad to have in the pantry when summer is over.
